Big Figure
THE BIG FIGURE is a band arranged around a duo. It kind of works like Steely Dan I suppose but without that same level of grumpiness- or so they would have you think. The duo in question are Sam West & Calum McCann, two schoolfriends from the southside of Glasgow who have spent the last few years touring the world with their other band, the rootsy blues band THE FORTUNATE SONS picking up critical acclaim wherever they've gone- from Glastonbury to Glastonbusby. After writing a bunch of new songs the guys quickly realised that this new material wasn't really going to work with the band and decided to build a studio and record the songs themselves under a new name- THE BIG FIGURE.
The results of these recording sessions have weilded something unique, with the THE BIG FIGURE's more eclectic musical influences coming to the fore. Sam West's classicly trained baritone provides a Jeff Buckleyesque sense of drama and power alongside the swirling jangle of McCann's Peter Buck/Johnny Marr influenced guitar lines.
The band's first gig was supporting Jools Holland on Saturday 2nd July 2011 at Ragley Hall in front of a crowd of thousands and by all accounts was a
huge success!
